Middle-Class Voiceover: Making Cash in the Middle-Class. Taught by Kevin Kilpatrick, co-presented by Bobbi Maxwell. The session would begin with telling my story. I was cruising along in my VO career in 2008 when the recession hit. Because a large portion (about 80%) of my income came from automotive voiceover, I took a large financial hit as the auto industry shut down marketing budgets. That taught me to hustle to DIVERSIFY my income stream. It was strictly tactical at this point. It wasn't a passion for doing one genre over the other; I had to strategize how to stabilize my income. I started focusing on genres that would provide RECURRING work. That's when I started aggressively pursuing genres like E-learning, Telephony, Training Video Clients, etc. All of these genres can provide recurring work. After establishing the Middle-Class VO concept, we would have script workouts. Attendees would select a category among a handful of genres I'd present and then read. I or Bobbi would then offer direction and feedback. After all attendees have had a chance to read, we would discuss the marketing angles. There are no new nuggets of gold here; it's just persistence, professionalism and patience. A final message for attendees: the importance of giving back to the VO community. I cannot tell you how grateful I am to be here in this position. I had so many people have an impact on my career and I would not be here without some advice and encouragement I have received along the way. You get back what you give. I'm a firm believer in that. Nobody will be more passionate about helping people succeed in this industry that myself and Bobbi Maxwell.
